Alex Higgins passes away

Alex Higgins passed away today in Belfast at 61 years of age after a lifetime of entertaining his fans.

Alex, one of the greatest snooker players to ever pick up a cue had been battling cancer for years and had recently been very ill after the side effects of the treatments took there toll.

Muldoon leads Irish charge

Vincent Muldoon will be leading the line for Ireland for the upcoming World Under-21 Championships in Letterkenny next weekend when he leads a eight strong team of juniors into the initial group stages of the event.

Muldoon will be by far the most experienced of the Irish having played in numerous World Under-21's since his debut in 2005 in Bahrain.

Indeed Muldoon lost in the Last 32 of that event to China's Li Hang who was also making his debut at that level. Five years later the duo are among a shortlist of clear favorites for the prestigious event after two very impressive amateur careers and a short stint at pro level.

6 Red Quarter Final Line Up

The 6 Red Championship in Thailand is down to the latter stages with the quarter finals taking place tomorrow morning at 10am Thailand time.

Defending champion Jimmy White is still in the mix after seeing off Thai player Noppadon Noppachorn 6-2 and IBSF World Champion Alfie Burden 6-1.

Jimmy will now face fellow professional Barry Hawkins after he reached the quarters after two hard fought matches.

Barry edged past both Mohammed Shehab and Thepchaiya Un-nooh 6-5 and wont find things any easier tomorrow against Jimmy who loves the six red format.

Power Snooker Revealed

Power Snooker was launched today in central London by Rod Gunner and Ed Simmons, the duo that have developed this exciting new concept aimed at injecting a little razzmatazz into snooker. 

They were joined by Mr. Razzmatazz himself Barry Hearn, ITV's Head of Sport Niall Sloane and Maurice Kelly from Riley's.

This impressive line up was rounded off by 3 time World Champion Ronnie O'Sullivan who in true Ronnie style stole the show with his comments about the World Snooker Championships being "a bore".  Read more...

 

O'Brien to host charity night

Fergal O'Brien will be playing an exhibition night in the Star and Crescent Snooker Club in Fairgreen, Drogheda next Monday the 26th of July. The night is in aid of SOSAD (Save our Sons and Daughters) which is a suicide awareness charity that is doing great work in the area.

The exhibition is being organized by club owner Malachy Callan who hopes the night will be a great success in support of the hard working charity. Tickets are available from the club and on the night and play kicks off at 8pm

   

6 Red Event - Day Two

Defending Champion Jimmy White got his challenge back on track today winning his only match of the day 5-0 against Australia's James Mifsud in the opening session of the day.

Other top pro's however found it hard going however as Joe Perry lost out 5-4 to Alfie Burden and Scott Mackenzie defeated Mark Williams 5-3 in this mornings session.

POWER SNOOKER!

The guys over at The Snooker Forum are reporting that a new one day event to be held in October called Power Snooker will be unveiled on Thursday.

Due to a press embargo they have not given any specific details of the event which will be aired on ITV4 Live for the full 8 hours which will be from the 02 Arena in London on the 30th of October.

Pagett steals the show

Welshman Andrew Pagett stole the show today at the Sangsom 6 Red invitational event in Thailand when he produced not one but two maximum breaks in his 5-2 victory over India's Manan Chandra.

Andrew was only brought in at last minute when Ryan Day decided to compete in the BTV Cup in China instead of the 6 Red but today's showing certainly showed why he should be there. Read more...
